Overview

A small group programme over five sessions for senior developers and new leads, already carrying a team or about to. You learn to read a project like a manager, run people without losing their trust, and hold a delivery date.

What you can do afterwards

  • Break a vague request into scope, estimate and risk
  • Run a one to one that people do not dread
  • Give feedback that changes behaviour instead of causing silence
  • Hold a release date, or raise the alarm early enough that it still helps
  • Say a hard thing to a client without losing the relationship

Included in the course

  • A written review of one plan or estimate you are working on now
  • A recorded practice of one difficult conversation, with feedback

Upcoming classes

Every session runs from 20:00 to 21:00 Vietnam time. One class opens per month, the first one after the 2 September holiday. The three nearest are below.

What we cover

  1. Session 1

    From doing to leading

The job changes shape, and most people notice too late.

    • What you stop being measured on, and what replaces it
    • The three traps of a new lead: doing it yourself, avoiding the hard talk, saying yes to everything
    • Where your authority actually comes from when nobody reports to you yet
  2. Session 2

Reading a project like a manager

Scope, estimate, risk and dependency, on a real plan of yours.

    • Turning a vague request into a scope you can defend
    • Estimating in a way that survives contact with reality
    • Finding the dependency that will hurt you in week six
    • Where to put buffer, and how to talk about it honestly
  3. Session 3

    Leading people

The part that has no shortcut and no framework worth trusting blindly.

    • Running a one to one that produces something
    • Feedback that lands: what to say, when, and how specific
    • Delegating without either abandoning or hovering
    • Two conversations everyone avoids: underperformance and someone leaving
  4. Session 4

    Quality and delivery

How a team keeps a date without burning itself down.

    • Definition of done that the whole team actually agrees on
    • A code review culture that is fast and still catches things
    • Release discipline: what has to be boring
    • The few numbers worth watching, and the many worth ignoring
  5. Session 5

    Clients and stakeholders

Carrying bad news, managing expectations, and reporting.

    • Saying a date will slip, early, without losing trust
    • Managing expectations before they become promises
    • Writing a status report someone will read
    • Negotiating scope when the deadline cannot move

What people I have led say

Read what the people who have worked with me, and the teams I have led, say about the working environment I build. It is the clearest way to see what I can bring to you.

It was a real pleasure working with everyone. The team is both sharp and warm, I learned a lot and I am leaving with good memories. Thank you to Chien, a project manager with real fire in him, who always found the words that got a release over the deadline.

Questions people ask

I am not a lead yet. Should I wait?

No. The best time is the year before the title, when you can practise without the cost of getting it wrong. Most people in the programme are senior developers being asked to take more responsibility.

Why a group and not one to one?

Because half of leading is seeing how someone else handles the same situation. The group is small, one to three, so everyone still gets time on their own case.

Do I need to bring a real project?

Yes, and it should be one you are working on now. We use your plan, your estimate and your team in the exercises. Bring a hypothetical one and the sessions turn into theory.

Is this about Scrum or a specific framework?

No. Frameworks are a small part of it. We work on judgement: what to do when the framework does not tell you, which is most of the time.

A refund within 30 days

For 30 days from the day you sign up, if you want to stop, I return the full fee. No reason asked, no explaining needed. Message me at the email or number on the contact page and the transfer goes out within five working days.

After 30 days there is no refund, because by then most of the material has been covered. If something in your life forces you to stop, tell me and I will hold your place in a later class rather than let it go to waste.
